Care Antifungal 5% w/v Medicated Nail Lacquer
Treats mild fungal nail infections, kills the nail fungus which prevents spreading
Care Antifungal Nail Lacquer is a pharmacy only product and contains an antifungal – amorolfine 5% w/v. Amorolfine 5% is clinically proven to kill a variety of fungi and is used to treat onychomycosis (fungal infection of toenails and fingernails).
It works by stopping the production of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. Without ergosterol, the cell membrane breaks down and the fungi are destroyed.
The pack contains a full treatment kit with a 3ml bottle of lacquer, 30 swabs, 30 files and ten spatulas – sufficient for 3 months treatment.
Who can use this product?
It can be used by adults and the elderly to treat up to two nails, where the upper half or the sides of the nail are affected. If more of the nail is affected, a GP should be consulted. Should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if advised by a doctor.
How to use this product?
Nails should be treated once a week. After application, the lacquer continues to be active for 7 days, penetrating the nail bed and targeting the source of the infection. Once dry, it is unaffected by soap or water.
- FILE THE NAIL
Before the first application, the infected areas of the nail, including the nail surface, should be filed down as much as possible, using the nail file provided. Files used on infected nails should not be used on healthy nails as this can spread the infection. To prevent the spread of infection, care should be taken that no one other than the patient uses the files from the kit.
- CLEAN THE NAIL
One of the swabs provided (or nail varnish remover) should be used to clean the nail surface. Steps 1 and 2 should be repeated for each affected nail.
- APPLY THE LACQUER
One of the re-usable applicators should be dipped into the bottle of lacquer. The lacquer must not be wiped off on the edge of the bottle before it is applied. The lacquer should be applied evenly over the entire surface of the nail. This should be repeated for every affected nail. The treated nails should be left to dry for approximately 3 minutes.
- CLEAN THE APPLICATOR
The applicators provided are re-usable. However, it is important to clean them thoroughly after each treatment procedure, using the same swab used for nail cleansing. Touching newly treated nails with the swab should be avoided. The nail lacquer bottle should be closed tightly. The swab is inflammable and should be disposed of carefully.
Nails grow slowly, so it may be 2-3 months before there is a noticeable improvement in nail condition. Typically, treatment for fingernails can take 6 months and for toenails 9 months to a year, so it is important to continue with the treatment.
