Constipation is common and can usually be treated at home with simple changes to your diet and lifestyle.
Drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding alcohol and increasing the fibre in your diet can help make your poo softer and easier to pass
If you feel the urge to poo, don’t delay going to the toilet. Raising your knees above your hips and giving yourself plenty of time to use the toilet can also help.
Increasing your activity levels such as going for a walk or run each day can also help you poo more regularly
It’s likely to be constipation if:
You have not had a poo at least 3 times in a week
The poo is often difficult to push out and larger than usual
The poo is often dry, hard or lumpy
Constipation has many possible causes. Sometimes there is no obvious reason. The most common causes include:
Not eating enough fibre – such as fruit, vegetables and cereals
Not drinking enough fluids
Not moving enough, or spending long periods of time sitting
Often ignoring the urge to go to the toilet
Rarely constipation may be caused by a medical condition.
